Denver operates under a strong-mayor form of government.
Mayor
Mike Johnston has been mayor since July 2023. The mayor serves a four-year term and is limited to three terms. The mayor appoints department heads and prepares the city budget.
City Council
The Denver City Council has 13 members: 11 elected by district and 2 at-large. All seats are non-partisan. Members serve four-year terms. The council appropriates funds and can override a mayoral veto with a 9/13 vote.
Structure
As a consolidated city-county, Denver combines city and county functions. The mayor is the chief executive, and the council is the legislative body.
